Shepherd Stubbs Mentoring Scheme

Alex Wilson MCIPD has successfully completed her CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) finals. She commenced the CIPD programme in 2009 shortly after leaving the business to start a family. Alex was supported through the programme by her nominated mentor, Jonathan Stubbs FCIPD, Director of Shepherd Stubbs Recruitment, who took the personnel and development qualification in the mid-nineties, and is the key driver of learning and development policy within the Shepherd Stubbs organisation. The CIPD professional mentoring scheme is one of a range of development and social responsibility projects being undertaken by the company. The business also has a multi-level succession plan linked to staff CPD (Continuing Professional Development) plans and competency framework.
Shepherd Stubbs, who as well as being an REC accredited centre for the Certificate in Recruitment Practice national recruitment qualifications scheme, was one of the first in the region to have its training and development achievements recognised by being awarded IIP (Investors in People) ‘Silver’ in 2009.
Jonathan Stubbs comments, “Our business is committed to professional learning and development in the HR and Recruitment arenas. It is typical of our belief that we encourage and support not only those that are part of our existing organisation but also those that are no longer working in the business. This part-time post graduate degree has enabled Alex to gain a qualification and incorporate her family priorities whilst providing her with a more generalist HR knowledge base to take forward in future HR consultancy projects with local businesses.”
Alex says, “The support I received from Jonathan and the Shepherd Stubbs business was vital in order to help me achieve the CIPD qualification. The programme ran by The University of Bedfordshire relies on its students gaining access to organisational information such as financials, policies and systems and to real organisational challenges facing the business.
“Although I am an ex-employee, Jonathan was happy to spend time helping me plan my written report work, final research report and exam preparation. He provided me with an honest overview of the business and the challenges facing SSR thus providing me with ‘real life’ case studies to base my research and written work around. He also facilitated my attendance at local HR professionals’ networking events where I gained invaluable experience by exchanging views with other HR managers from different sectors.”
